What is nickel and why is it in kids jewellery?
Nickel is a metal that manufacturers use as a base material in most affordable jewellery. It's cheap, it's workable, and it takes gold plating well. The problem is that nickel is also one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis — an allergic skin reaction — in children. When nickel touches sensitive skin repeatedly, the immune system starts to react. The result is redness, itching, and sometimes small blisters around the ears.
What makes this tricky is that the reaction doesn't always happen immediately. A child might wear a pair of earrings for weeks before her skin starts reacting. By then, most moms have already written off the entire category of affordable jewellery as unsafe for their daughter.
So are nickel free earrings actually safe?
Yes — but with one important caveat. Not all jewellery that claims to be nickel free actually is. The term is largely unregulated in India, which means brands can use it loosely without any independent verification.
What you want to look for is surgical grade stainless steel as the base metal. This is the same material used in medical equipment and surgical instruments. It genuinely contains no nickel, doesn't corrode, and doesn't react with skin even with prolonged contact. It's the gold standard for jewellery that's safe for sensitive skin — in children and adults.
The second thing to look for is PVD coating on top of the base metal. PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition — it's a process that bonds the gold finish to the metal at a molecular level rather than just painting it on top. Standard gold plating chips, fades, and exposes the base metal underneath within weeks. PVD coating holds significantly longer, which means the metal your daughter's skin is actually touching stays protected.
What about hypoallergenic jewellery?
Hypoallergenic and nickel free are not the same thing, even though they're often used interchangeably. Hypoallergenic means the product is less likely to cause a reaction — it doesn't mean it contains no allergens. A piece of jewellery can be labelled hypoallergenic and still contain trace amounts of nickel.
If your daughter has sensitive skin or has previously reacted to jewellery, hypoallergenic alone is not enough. You want nickel free, surgical grade stainless steel specifically.
How to tell if your daughter is reacting to nickel
The signs are usually pretty clear once you know what to look for. Redness around the earlobe that appears within 12 to 24 hours of wearing earrings. Itching or discomfort that gets worse throughout the day. Small raised bumps or blistering in severe cases. Skin that feels warm to the touch around the piercing.
If you notice any of these, remove the earrings immediately and let her ears rest for a few days. Once healed, try a pair made with surgical grade stainless steel and see if the reaction disappears. For most children, it does.
Does the earring back matter?
More than most people realise. Most standard earring backs are sharp and pointed — designed for adults, not for children who wear their earrings all day through school, PE, lunch, and playtime. A sharp back pressing against the soft skin behind a young child's ear for eight hours is uncomfortable at best and irritating at worst.
Look for rounded screw backs specifically. These sit flat against the skin with no sharp edges or pressure points. A child wearing rounded screw backs can genuinely forget she's wearing earrings — which is exactly what you want.
